Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of coconuts do you use for Vita Coco?
We use younger coconuts for all our beverages. The average age of the coconuts we use is seven months.

What’s the different between coconut water and coconut milk?
There’s a big difference between coconut water and coconut milk.  Coconut water comes from inside younger coconuts filled with a clear, electrolyte-rich juice that contains zero fat and zero cholesterol.  Coconut milk, on the other hand, is what is produced from grating the coconut meat of older, brown coconuts: a white, rich liquid containing oils and fat, and often used as an ingredient in cooking and baking.

Do you pasteurize this product?
Yes. Our machinery uses a patented method to extract the coconut water then filter and flash pasteurize the water at 120 degrees for up to five seconds, before packaging it in its aseptic Tetra Pak package.  Only Tetra Pak stabilizes the coconut water and gives Vita Coco a shelf life of 12 months.

Tell me more about your packaging. What is Tetra Pak™?
Vita Coco produces the freshest tasting coconut water possible by packaging its beverages in Tetra Pak, an eco- and socially-responsible form of packaging (Tetra Pak is BPA-free) based on the use of wood fiber, a sustainable source.  Tetra Pak helped form the Carton Council, which to date has given one in three households, in 39 states, carton recycling access.  Tetra Pak was also recognized with The Presidential Award for Sustainable Development in 1996. Tetra Pak is committed to making food safer with minimum stress on the environment.

How much coconut water should I drink?
We know consumers enjoy drinking Vita Coco regularly but always advise moderation.  Typically, we recommend no more than two to three 8.5-ounce servings per day.

Can women that are pregnant drink Vita Coco?
Yes, because it is pasteurized. In fact, Pregnancy Magazine featured Vita Coco as a way for expectant mothers to “drink smart” in their October 2010 issue.

Is Vita Coco gluten free and vegan-approved?
It’s a big yes to both: our coconut water is gluten free and vegan-approved, as Vita Coco does not contain any animal-derived or dairy products in its beverages.

Is Vita Coco kosher?
Yes, Vita Coco is kosher and is Star K certified.

How long after I open a Vita Coco does it stay fresh?
We suggest that if you open a Vita Coco and do not finish drinking it, that you place it in a refrigerator and drink it within 24 hours.

Where does Vita Coco produce its beverages?
Vita Coco produces coconut water in Brazil and in Southeast Asia.  Coconuts, as with any produce grown in different parts of the world, can taste slightly different based on climate and soil conditions.  Because of this, we note that ‘taste and color may vary’ on our packaging, but rest assured that regardless of the coconut’s country of origin, we strive for the freshest tasting, most delicious coconut water possible in every unit.
